SWING! celebrates the music of the Swing era of jazz, including many well-known tunes by artists like Duke Ellington, William “Count” Basie, Benny Goodman and others. Songs include “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)”; “Sing, Sing, Sing”, “Jumpin at the Woodside”; and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (of Company B)”. SWING! was a nominee for the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2000. Lynne Taylor-Corbett was a Tony Award nominee for Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography!
MALE 1 – 18-35 year old male. Jazzy baritone. Strong mover who is comfortable scatting and great with close harmonies. Should be comfortable with swing as well as harder, funkier rhythms. Features include Bli-Blip and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. Must have flexible voice and natural vibrato (but can sing straight tone when needed). SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES!
MALE 2 –25-40 year old male. Master of Ceremonies – This track combines roles played originally on Broadway by Casey MacGill and Michael Gruper (and later taken over by J.C. Montgomery). Should be comfortable scatting and being a straight man in comedic duet situation. Features include: It Don’t Mean a Thing and Two and Four. Must have flexible voice and natural vibrato (but can sing straight tone when needed). SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES!
FEMALE 1 – 18-30 year old female. Comedic soprano. Vocal chameleon who can switch between “legit” soprano sound (operatic ornaments to Bb) and hot beltress to comedic effect in the space of a single number. Features include Two and Four/Hit Me With a Hot Note and Cry Me a River. Excellent storyteller who is as comfortable with comedy as she is with simplicity of a romantic jazz ballad. Should move well and be comfortable with close harmonies (singing on the inside of the texture). Played on Broadway by Laura Benanti. Must have flexible voice and natural vibrato (but can sing straight tone when needed). SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES!
FEMALE 2 – 25-35 year old female. Soulful mezzo. This track is all about range – being able to have weight down to F, belt to Db, floating soprano to high C. Played on Broadway by Ann Hampton Callaway, this leading lady needs to be extremely comfortable with close harmonies (singing on the inside of the texture), scatting and impersonating musical instruments (sax and trumpet). Features include: I’ll Be Seeing You, Bounce Me Brother With a Solid Four and Bli Blip. Decent movement required and the ability to tell a clear, specific story through vocal improvisation (i.e. without lyrics). Must have flexible voice and natural vibrato (but can sing straight tone when needed). SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES!
LINDY HOP DANCERS – 18-40 year old men and women. Established partnerships are a plus. Should have solid training in all styles. Strong technique required. SEEKING ALL ETHNICITIES!
